Kean’s Shabazz Green (Summit, Sr.) was selected to the All-New Jersey Athletic Conference first team. Green, a Summit High grad, anchored an offensive line that allowed only five sacks this season, with the backfield accounting for 177.9 yards gained on the ground per game, second highest in the NJAC. Kean completed the season with a 9-2 record.
Rowan’s Kevin DelleDonne (Summit, Soph.), another product of Summit High, earned All-NJAC honorable mention at tight end. He caught 20 passes for 250 yards, three for touchdowns, for an average reception of 12.5 yards. His long gain was 39 yards. The Profs finished the season 7-3.
Johns Hopkins’ Livingston duo received All-Centennial Conference accolades. Mike Stoffel (Livingston, Sr.) was named to the first team offensive line for the second consecutive year. The Livingston High grad has been a mainstay at left tackle for the 9-2 Blue Jays, who are still alive in the NCAA Division 3 playoffs. The line has allowed only four sacks this year, while creating the opportunities for the playmakers to gain 394.6 yards per game. Hopkins’ placekicker Alex Lachman (Livingston, Jr.) earned second team All-Centennial honors. He is second on the team in points scored with 86, having converted 15 of 20 field goal attempts and 41 of 44 extra-point tries. His long field goal conversion came from 38 yards. Hopkins continues its search of a championship when it faces Thomas More in Crestview, Ky. this Saturday at 12 Noon.
MEN’S SOCCER
Bucknell’s season ended on Sunday with a 5-0 road loss to second-ranked Virginia in the second round of the NCAA Division 1 playoffs. Neither Brendan Burgdorf (Westfield, Fr.) nor Josh Plump (Westfield, Fr.) were able to get off any shots on goal for the Bison, which finished the season 17-6-0.
Colorado College’s Matt Fechter (Westfield, Fr.) was named Newcomer of the Year by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The forward out of Pingry scored 11 goals for the Tigers and was twice named the SCAC Player of the Week. He also earned first team All-SCAC recognition.
Dickinson’s Thomas Parkinson (Westfield, Jr.) earned first-team All-Centennial Conference accolades. The Westfield High alum tied for the team lead in goals scored with 10, five of which were match winners.
Franklin & Marshall’s Matt Melino (Westfield, Sr.) finished his collegiate career with second-team All-Centennial honors. Another product of Westfield High, Melino scored four goals (two match winners) and assisted on six others for the Diplomats.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Monmouth’s Lia Fierro (Short Hills, Jr.) earned first-team All-Northeast Conference honors for her work in goal this season. The Millburn High grad was tops in the NEC with 12 shutouts and a goals-against average of .054. Her save percentage of .841 was second best in the NEC.
Williams College’s Lauren Sinnenberg (Westfield, Sr.) earned All-New England Small College Athletic Conference honors. The keeper combined for 13 shutouts this year, while allowing only eight goals and making 51 saves.
Wilkes’ Katy Fissel (Madison, Soph.) was a first-team All-Freedom Conference selection. A midfielder out of Madison High, Fissel was good for three goals and two assists despite being limited to action in only 10 matches due to injuries.
Bryn Mawr’s Laura Costanzo (Short Hills, Sr.) earned All-Centennial Conference honorable mention. The Millburn High grad led the Owls in scoring with six goals, with two of those accounting for wins. The midfielder also earned credit for three assists.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Hamilton College won its own Tip-Off Tournament to begin the season, defeating SUNY-Canton, 89-56, on Friday and Ursinus, 79-78, on Saturday. Pat Sullivan (Madison, Soph.) led Hamilton in scoring with 18 points in the Canton outing, on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor (1-for-3 from long range) and 3-for-3 from the foul line. He grabbed four rebounds in 19 minutes. The Ursinus victory found Sullivan, a Delbarton grad, scoring 12 points (4-7 (1-2), 3-8), while controlling six caroms and assisting on three buckets in 26 minutes before fouling out.
James Johnson (Summit, Sr.) scored a point for every minute that he was on the floor as Rutgers-Newark toyed with Penn State-Harrisburg, 89-52, in Annville, Pennsylvania on Sunday. Johnson, a 5-10 guard out of Summit High, was perfect on three heaves from downtown, to which he added three free throws from six attempts for 12 total points. The night before, the Scarlet Raiders (2-1) suffered their first defeat of the season, 76-60, to Randolph-Macon. Johnson had a team-high six rebounds while putting 13 points on the board. He shot 5-for-11 from the field, including 2-for-5 from 3-point range, and 1-for-4 from the foul line.
Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, Jr.) scored 17 points in 26 minutes to help Catholic University defeat Gettysburg, 69-48, in a Saturday road game. The Seton Hall Prep grad nailed six of nine field goal attempts, including his only shot from outside the 3-point arc, as well as all four free throws. The Cardinals improved to 2-2 with the win.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Danielle Scott (Summit, Jr.) is back for her junior season at Eastern Mennonite and so far, so good as the Bears have run off three victories – all at home in Harrisonburg, Virginia – to begin the campaign. In the opening 55-53 win over Mary Baldwin last Tuesday, Scott missed a double-double by one rebound. She scored 10 points and had nine boards. Friday saw EMU take care of Meredith College, 86-76, as Scott scored 13 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the floor and 1-for-2 from the line. The Summit High product also had four rebounds. EMU showed John Jay no mercy, winning 83-27 on Saturday. Scott scored nine points (3-for-6 from the floor, 3-for-4 from the line) and brought down nine boards.
WRESTLING
Franklin & Marshall’s Matt Fullowan (Berkeley Heights, Soph.) got sixth place in the 174-pound bracket at the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Maryland recently. Fullowan began with an 8-1 victory over Duquesne’s Seth Csaszar, and then went on to lose, 4-1, to Bucknell’s Shane Riccio, the top seed and eventual champion at the weight. Moving into the consolation bracket, Fullowan then reeled off victories over Navy’s Paul DeLuca, 5-2, and Virginia Tech’s John Dickson, 4-2, before dropping a 2-0 verdict to Virginia Tech’s Anthony Trongone. Waiting for the Gov. Livingston grad in the battle for fifth place was none other than Duquesne’s Csaszar, who obviously figured something out about Fullowan, because he reversed the earlier decision, defeating Fullowan, 5-4. Fullowan settled for sixth place.
King’s Frankie Davis (Madison, Sr.) won one bout and lost two at the Ohio State Duals in Columbus, Ohio last weekend. The Madison High grad, grappling at 149 pounds, began with a 3-1 decision over Ohio Northern’s K. Hoopes. But he then came out on the short end of decisions to Mount St. Joseph’s T. Fehring, 7-1, and Mount Union’s R. Clark, 4-2.
VOLLEYBALL
Lehigh’s Emily Flanagan (Chatham, Soph.) recorded five kills as the Mountain Hawks lost to Army, 3-0, in a first-round Patriot League contest in West Point, N.Y. on Saturday. Lehigh ended the season 14-16.
MEN’S SQUASH
Bowdoin began the season last weekend with three victories from four matches. A 6-3 victory over Connecticut College found Peter Cipriano (Summit, Sr.) knocking off William Moger, 11-6, 11-7, 11-4, at third singles. David Funk (Short Hills, Sr.) handled first singles for Bowdoin, but lost to Caleb Garza, 13-11, 11-3, 11-6, 5-11, 11-7.
Hamilton proved an easier nut to crack for Bowdoin, which breezed past the Continentals, 9-0. Funk took care of James Hogan at first singles, 11-8, 11-4, 11-5, while Cipriano defeated Hal Lee (Short Hills, Jr.), 11-2, 11-9, 11-3, in the fourth slot. Both local players sat out Bowdoin’s 9-0 romp over MIT, but resumed play against perennial top dog Trinity (Conn.), to whom they lost, 9-0. Funk came up short at first singles to Supreet Singh, 11-3, 11-2, 11-6, while Cipriano lost to Vikram Malhota, 11-5, 11-6, 11-7, at fourth singles. As for Lee and Hamilton, they rebounded to defeat Northeastern, 7-2. Lee was victorious at fourth singles over Warren Scott, 11-7, 11-8, 11-5.
WOMEN’S SQUASH
Hamilton’s Alyssa Bawden (Short Hills, Soph.) won both her matches at third singles in 9-0 victories over Bowdoin and Northeastern last weekend. The score over Bowdoin’s Monica Wlodarczyk on Saturday was 11-1, 7-11, 11-4, 11-8, while she got past Northeastern’s Diana Toubman, 4-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-4, 11-2, on Sunday.
