Bullying at Millburn High School Becomes Topic of Concern
By Sara Louise Lazarus
9/18/2009

MILLBURN, NJ - The Millburn Township School District is dealing with reported incidents of bullying of incoming 9th graders by senior girls. These episodes occurred mainly on the first day of school. "This seems to be something that happens yearly," said Superintendent Richard Brodow, "though I gather it was more brutal and graphic this year."

According to conversations of parents in schoolyards and on local listserves, the "hazing" took several forms. Apparently there is an annual "slut list" that gets distributed. The consensus is that this year the list was particularly vulgar, with "hundreds" of copies being distributed in hallways.

Two mothers reported that their daughters were pushed against lockers. Another spoke of whistles being blown in girls’ faces. In addition, certain freshman girls received phone calls late this summer telling them to wear to school camouflage t-shirts with certain acronyms written on them. Another rumor is that the house of one of the girls on the list was vandalized with graffiti.

The bullying appears to be confined to a specific group of 9th graders, as there are numerous freshman girls who say they have seen none of this. Parents of Middle School and High School students have voiced concern, with many making calls and writing letters to administrators, and several planning to speak up at the Board Of Education meeting Monday, September 21. They want to see those students responsible for the episodes punished, and are also asking for Administration assurance that this will never happen again.

Dr. Brodow says he is talking with staff about ways to avoid such incidents in the future. He assures that he is also more than willing to hold the perpetrators accountable, but is frustrated that no one has come forward willing to name names. But one parent says, "It is just too much to expect 9th grade girls who have been bullied on their 1st days of high school to go to the principal’s office and "rat out" their fellow students. It is just way too intimidating."

According to Dr. Brodow, High School Principal William Miron and other staff have addressed the issue at assemblies. In addition, Dr. Brodow has drafted a letter to parents stating that "any so called ‘rituals’ which in any way threatens, degrades or makes any youngster feel intimidated or less than whole is a violation of school policy and just plain wrong. We are encouraging any student who either has been a victim of or a witness to such behavior to please come forward. Those who are found to have engaged in this type of behavior will be disciplined. Parents, along with school personnel must make it perfectly clear that hazing is wrong and we as a school community are better than that. Let’s not let the actions of a few speak for the goodness of the many."
