SUMMIT, NJ - Food Network star Ingrid Hoffman, host of Simply Delicioso Cooking, held a cooking demonstration on Sunday morning at the Summit Wine and Food Festival. Hoffman prepared Tomatillo-Pablano Shrimp, Arroz con Coco, Hearts of Palm and Corn Salad in a Radicchio Cup, and a Guava Jalapeno Margarita.
Miss Hoffman told The Alternative Press, "The Summit Wine and Food Festival is for the high-minded foodie and wine drinker. A lot of festivals are very commercial. Here, there are amazing chefs and sommeliers." Regarding her visit to the Festival, Hoffman said that she had never before been to Summit, "it’s lovely. I want to come back. It’s a beautiful town." She continued, "I wish we had a store like the Wine List of Summit in Miami. I’m very impressed with the whole scene." "This is such an intimate setting. It’s very special to cook for people I know," Hoffman said.
In announcing the menu for the day’s demonstration, she commented, "I love cooking with fruit. It’s a great way to add flavor to food without adding fat." Hoffman lamented the fact that a lot of Americans do not cook, which she attributed to the industrialization of food – packaged and processed food. She said that her objective is to "inspire people. Cooking from scratch doesn’t need to be difficult." Hoffman said, "I like the adventure of not knowing what the end result is going to be. I’m not a classically trained chef. I’m an eater and a cook of anything going bad in the refrigerator."
Attendee Mark Laytin commented, "I watch [Hoffman’s] show every week on the Food Network. What’s especially great about this is that you learn a lot. There are takeaways - - things you can actually learn."
Summit resident Hyla Garlen came with her son, Daniel, who lives in Springfield. Hyla Garlen said, "Peter Alexander made sure I was coming. I’ve had four visits in 24 hours with my son thanks to the Festival." Daniel replied, "It’s always a pleasure to visit my mother." Hoffman’s cooking demonstration was the third demonstration the pair visited.
Hoffman said that when Ivan Ruiz, organizer of the Festival, called her to participate, she said her management said no, that it could be a flop. She said, "I said, ’I’m going’. And I’m so happy I did that. I had never been to Summit, New Jersey before and I am so so so impressed!" She added that the chefs and sommeliers at the Festival "are here because we love what we are doing."
