Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen was welcomed to Saint Barnabas Medical Center in July. Saint Barnabas Medical Center and the Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center are both within his district and together provide comprehensive women’s health services to residents throughout New Jersey. While visiting the hospital, he met with key members of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System, Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center and Saint Barnabas Medical Center senior leadership who thanked him for his support on several hospital issues. Congressman Frelinghuysen, an advocate for women’s health services, expressly requested a tour of new services and of the programs within his district that provide care to women and children. During his visit, he toured The Center for Wound and Burn Healing, Women’s Health Services, the McMullen’s Children’s Center.
The Center for Wound and Burn Healing treats a variety of non-healing wounds using the latest wound healing agents, treatments and medications. While visiting the area, Congressman Frelinghuysen had the opportunity to view a patient being treated in the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chamber. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) provides 100 percent oxygen in a pressurized environment which in turn increases the concentration of oxygen in the blood and tissues. The benefit of HBOT comes from the increased oxygen in the blood and tissues which speeds wound healing.
While touring Women’s Health Services, he met with staff and visited areas including the OB/GYN clinic, Obstetrical Pavilion and the McMullen Children’s Center. Saint Barnabas Medical Center has one of the largest maternity programs in the state. The Regional Perinatal Center provides care for high-risk and critically ill infants in its Level III, 56-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The NICU was among 12 hospitals worldwide selected to participate in a Vermont Oxford Network project to help develop best practices. As an advocate for children, he concluded his visit with a tour of the McMullen Children’s Center which is among the busiest pediatric units in New Jersey.
