UNION, NJ - A school that features online courses, an attitude focusing on children and a set of instructors composed of teachers and coaches may sound like a stellar institution for scholars. For the owners of a driving school based in Union, this is the recipe for a business that teaches people how to drive.
For 23 years, Don-Tre Driving School has provided driving instruction for residents in many New Jersey towns. According to Donald and Peter Carpenter, the school’s owners, their business not only prepares students to drive, but employs instructors who are trained for school systems. "We have school teachers and coaches, educated people," Donald Carpenter said. "When a kid gets picked up, he’s picked up by a professional that knows kids." While the majority of instructors are teachers, those who are not at least have a college degree or are in the process of acquiring one, the owners said.
The school is centered around the children who attend, the owners said. "I always tell the parents I can close this driving school. It isn’t all about the money, it’s about the kids," stated Donald Carpenter. Peter Carpenter added, "Most of our instructors understand that because they’re working with kids all the time." "If you remove that mentality, then you’re in trouble, or the kids are in trouble," Donald Carpenter told The Alternative Press.
Though the company focuses on children, they are not the only potential customers. According to Donald Carpenter, Don-Tre Driving School also provides behind-the-wheel instruction to adults. "For people who live in New York and don’t have cars because they don’t need them, then move out here and call us, we’ll give them lessons," he said.
Don-Tre Driving School also offers lessons off the road. The business provides an online defensive driving course that allows eligible students to remove two points from their driving record upon successful completion, according to the owners. "It’s a 6-hour course, and it’s offered to any licensed driver," Peter Carpenter said.
According to Donald Carpenter, this online course enhanced his company. "When I taught the 2-point class, I’d have to go to a classroom and teach for the six hours," he said. "Now you can just go online."
When asked what to expect from the company in the future, the owners of the school said that their services may reach people looking to earn commercial driver’s licenses. "Of course, we’d have to get a facility for the trucks and busses," Donald Carpenter said. He told The Alternative Press, "We’re always looking to expand to what is new in the business."
