Maplewood Police Department Promotes Officers

MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Families and friends gathered at the municipal building on Valley Street in Maplewood yesterday, as Mayor Victor De Luca and the rest of the Maplewood Township Committee honored promotions at the Maplewood Police Department at the first meeting of the month.
Jon Perna was named new Captain of the Maplewood Police, Dawn Williams was named Lieutenant, and Vincent Dicisco was named Sergeant. Chief of Police Robert Cimino and other members of the police department and community gathered to show their support.
“I want to thank the mayor, the committee, and my colleagues for their support,” Perna said. “I promise to do the best job I possibly can.”
In other business, De Luca announced the proclamation for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans gender pride month to the community.
“I am declaring June gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans gender pride month in the town of Maplewood,” De Luca said. “This will celebrate the great diversity of Maplewood.”
The Pride Festival, which is a celebration for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans gender community, will take place this Saturday from noon until 5:00 p.m. in South Orange.
Robert Roe, health officer for the Township of Maplewood Health Department, addressed implementing an ordinance for garbage overflowing from businesses on Springfield Avenue.
“I believe it is important for a fixed fine for the violation,” Roe said. “It will make it easier for enforcement personnel to supply a ticket.”
De Luca and the committee agreed a sign on the garbage cans, reminding business owners of the garbage limits, will be effective in the efforts to decrease litter and garbage on the street.
Roe also addressed the Maplewood Health Departments efforts in raising awareness to the community to get tested for Hepatitis C.
“A lot of people are affected by the viral Hepatitis C, especially those aged 50 or older,” Roe said.
“The department is working on educating the community and helping people have more options to get tested for it.”
Committee member Kathleen Leventhal presented the Permanent Advisory Committee Ordinance, which will allow residents to join the green team.
“The Green Team is the group that deals with the message of going green to the town,” Leventhal said.
The Green Team works together with the Environmental Advisory Committee in the going green efforts of Maplewood.
The next Maplewood Township Committee meeting is June 19 at 7 p.m. at the Maplewood Police Station.
