With shortened hospital stays after the birth of a newborn, and ever-growing geographic distance from close family, postpartum doulas are becoming more and more an integral presence who provides care and support to moms and dads soon after mom and baby leave the hospital and arrive home.
A postpartum doula is a skilled person who offers non-medical temporary support and assistance to moms and dads after the birth of their newborn. This assistance can involve breastfeeding support, baby bonding and infant soothing; basic newborn care; sibling care; light housekeeping, simple chores and simple meal preparation; referrals to local resources as needed; companionship, nonjudgmental support…..and more…..essentially support and assistance, as desired, so that moms and dads can relax and enjoy the wonder of having a newborn. A postpartum doula “mothers” the mom…….while offering support and assistance to everyone who is an important presence in the newborn’s world.
Christine Mastros Re is a DONA trained postpartum doula offering her services to Westfield and the surrounding area.
