Annual Investors Bank President’s Cup Race Runs Through Downtown Millburn
Tuesday, June 19, 2012 • 9:25am
MILLBURN, NJ - Some run for sport. Others run for exercise. Many run for fun. Whatever the reasons they run, the participants in the President’s Cup Race all have one thing in common. By running, they are greatly benefitting the communities of Millburn and Short Hills.
The 33rd Annual Investors Bank President’s Cup Race presented by the Millburn-Short Hills Chamber of Commerce was held on June 18, successfully continuing a beloved local tradition. The 5K run, which was officially sanctioned by USA Track and Field (USATF), followed a route through Essex Street and Millburn Avenue, both starting and finishing near Charlie Brown’s Steakhouse.
Men and women placing first, second, and third across thirteen different age categories were awarded prizes from Saucony, with members of USATF-NJ getting monetary rewards for placing in the top six. Jeff Perella, this year’s overall first place winner with a time of 15:02:25, received the prestigious Investors Bank President’s Cup.
“It’s a terrific event for the community,” said Mike Conforti, owner of The Sneaker Factory and a key manager of the race. “People know and expect it, and it’s a great event for people to gather and see one another … It’s a great opportunity for them to see their friends and family.”
The Sneaker Factory has been responsible for organizing the event since the first one, Conforti said, and the store does not at all profit from it. According to Conforti, close to 1,600 people participated in this year’s run, and the money they paid to register goes to a good cause. What is not used to fund the race itself is donated to the Millburn-Short Hills Chamber of Commerce, said Conforti.
“We are so excited to sponsor this event,” said Karol McNulty, executive director of the Chamber and manager of the race. McNulty said the proceeds from the run will go towards the Chamber Marketing Program, which promotes community happenings. McNulty was not the only member of the Chamber of Commerce in attendance. Vice President Patti Brown was also there on behalf of Investors Bank, which she said was happy to be part of the race.
“[The event] brings everybody out all in one place [to] celebrate the town and enjoy a run,” said Brown. “Investors Bank is very proud to be the premiere sponsor.”
The race certainly was a community event, attracting people of all ages. Before the President’s Cup competition, the Kids Fun Run was presented by the Priddy Learning Academy, with every child receiving a medal for participating. Additionally, Samuel Adams provided free beer for all event guests ages 21 and over, and Saucony was on hand to give visitors a preview of future products.
Cheryl Scher and Baxter Brooks are both veteran runners of many different races, but they say the President’s Cup is among their favorites.
“This is a party,” said Scher. “It just gets people out mixing, mingling, having a good time. What could be better than that?”
“Where else are you going to go on a Monday night to dance, have fun, get in a workout, and have some adult beverages?” she added.
Brooks said the event was a major one for locals.
“It’s always been a good turnout for people in the community to come out and support it,” he said. “That’s why the numbers have always been as good as they are.”
The race also brought first-time visitors to Millburn, allowing newcomers to see what the town has to offer. Jim Franks came from Ridgewood to make his debut at the President’s Cup, but he said that he would consider returning to Millburn after the race.
“I had never see Millburn before,” said Franks. “It looks like a nice place to come and have dinner with my wife.”
Additional race sponsors included the Mall at Short Hills, Peerless Beverage Company, The Alternative Press, and of course Charlie Brown’s Steakhouse. According to Dan Shea of Charlie Brown’s, the restaurant has a long history with the event.
“Charlie Brown’s has always participated and I imagine we always will,” he said.
It is being part of this 33-year relationship that perhaps best allows Shea to comment on the significance of the race. “It’s a long tradition,” he said. “People talk about it all year … It’s just part of the tradition of Millburn.”
